Experiencing the Digital School: A Hands-On Experience of a 1:1 Laptop Learning Enviroment

This course was taught by Bob Whicker, an Apple representative for integrating 1:1 laptop projects into schools. Bob had a powerful and moving power point presentation that explained exactly why a 1:1 solution is needed in schools today.

It is amazing to think that laptops are today's pencil. Laptops are the tools students want to use to learn, however opposition and dollars usually get in the way of implementing a 1:1 solution in schools today.

Bob spoke of his experience coming from Alaska and implementing a 1:1 solution as a superintendent of his schools. Bob shared great and powerful projects from his former students and explained the need of today's schools. Bob stated in over 90 implementations that he was been involved in that only 1 school didn't fit in the criteria of:

Decreased Discipline Issues
Increased Student Achievement
Increased Attendance
Decreased Dropouts

One school did result in higher discipline issues, because students were doing homework in the hallways and using their laptops in the hallway which wasn't allowed. This sounds pretty inspiring to me. One school even had issues of getting their kids to go home! Now that isn't very common.

Other topics covered by Bob were:

21 st Century Schools and access to 21 st Century Tools
Preparations, Policies, and Planning
Rollout Events
Machine Features, Care, and Use
Project Development

Bob didn't provide a website but can be found at apple education.
